ZJUAANC Founding Ceremony – June 1, 2012

On the afternoon of June 1, 2012, the North American Zhejiang University Alumni Association North Carolina Chapter held its official founding ceremony at North Carolina State University. Sixty-five Zhejiang University alumni from North Carolina and surrounding areas gathered to celebrate the establishment of the chapter.

ZJU representatives traveling from Hangzhou included Assistant to the President and Alumni Association Secretary-General Zhang Meifeng, Director of the Party Committee and President’s Office Hu Xuyang, Assistant Director of the Development and Liaison Office Bao Yongping, and Secretariat Secretary Hu Weijia. North American Alumni Association President Lu Chongqing and NC State University Vice Chancellor Li Bailian also attended to offer their congratulations.

The ceremony opened with the familiar strains of the ZJU school song. North American Alumni Association President Lu Chongqing first introduced the 36-year history and current vibrant development of the North American Alumni Association. He called on more young alumni to actively participate in alumni work and to carry forward the “Seeking Truth” spirit of our alma mater throughout North America.

Next, Huang Qin (preparatory committee chair) reported on the preparation process. As of the event, 157 alumni had completed online registration, representing diverse industries and age groups. Attendees reviewed the draft bylaws of the North Carolina ZJU Alumni Association, elected the first Council, and selected Radio Engineering Class of 1983 alumnus Huang Qin as the founding President.

In his acceptance speech, President Huang Qin fondly recalled his student years at ZJU more than twenty years earlier, noting that the experience remains an irreplaceable part of his life journey. He outlined the mission, functions, and tasks of the new chapter and expressed his hope that everyone would actively participate and support the association, working together to create a strong information-exchange platform for ZJU alumni across the greater North Carolina region and beyond.

Secretary-General Zhang Meifeng, together with Director Hu Xuyang, presented the ZJU flag to the new chapter on behalf of the university. She then delivered a detailed “Zhejiang University Alumni Work Report,” highlighting recent university developments, disciplinary trends, major research awards, overseas talent recruitment programs, and plans for new campus construction. She conveyed the university’s spiritual support for all ZJU alumni in the United States and invited overseas alumni to return to campus often and to contribute to building a world-class university.

Warm congratulatory letters and telegrams were received from the ZJU Alumni Association, the North American ZJU Alumni Association, and alumni associations in Suzhou, Wuxi, and other cities.

After the formal program, alumni gathered in small groups to reconnect, reminisce about their days in the Qiushi Garden, and establish new professional and personal ties. The founding ceremony concluded amid laughter and warm fellowship.
